Lakhs seized from Sathya Sai Trust's vehicle spark controversy

Two and a half months after his death, the ashram of Sathya Sai Baba in Puttaparthi is feeling trapped in a storm over the alleged diversion of the wealth left by the spiritual leader.

Two seizures of large amounts of cash by the police, allegedly belonging to the trust, while being transported out of Puttaparthy in Anantapur district has shaken the Ashram.

Saturday night seizures of 35.5 lakh rupees a vehicle near Anantapur has once again sparked controversy, with police alleging that the vehicle belonged to Satya [Images] Sai Central Trust. Moreover, RJ Ratnakar, the nephew of Baba and a trusted member says money has nothing to do with confidence.

Anantapur District Superintendent of Police Shahnawaz Qasim told mediapersons that the money is going to take Puttaparthy to Bangalore to be delivered to an unidentified person.

He said two people were arrested in this regard. One has been identified as Shekhar, driver of one of the members of the Foundation and Srinivasan V Shetty.

The money was seized by police in a vehicle during a search operation in the near Hindupur Kodikanda position. Qasim said the money came and arrested before a judge.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the money was part of the wealth is in the Yajurveda Mandir or chambers staff in the Satya Sai Baba Ashram. This part of the Ashram was opened on Thursday for the first time since the death of Baba.

Qasim says Shekhar revealed that the amount was given to him by Pradhan, a security chief in Yajurveda, and was to be delivered to a person whose phone number was given to him.
